Without this lecture, I would never know Ju-Ming carves on styrofoam first and then cover them with bronze, leaving the texture of styrofoam on the metal, which becomes his unique style. I have heard about that, but never understood it, until Professor Lee showed us the video recording the process that Ju-Ming completed his artworks. In the beginning of the class, Professor Lee wanted us to compare Ju-Ming's different sculptures with the same title. Through her explanation, I realized why artists often did many pieces of the same subject.
The key point is material. Ju-Ming is a talented artist who can bring natural characteristics into play. The sculpture will give viewers warm feelings if he carves in wood, but cool feelings if in bronze. Finding the new possibilities of materials is how artists surmount themselves, and is also what makes Ju-Ming a master.
