[作業-學習心得] 英語線上導覽:李美蓉教授

I have to say that these two lectures were very wonderful because of Professor Lee’s profession and humor. Although she is an artist, she wasn’t here for teaching us how to compose our own artwork but to give us tips on how to be an appreciator.
A new era has come for art appreciation where artworks are to be interpreted by views not by artists. Arts are no longer merely an entertainment exclusively for a few people. Everyone has the chance to appreciate pieces of artworks, and even becomes an artist.
The most important question is: how to appreciate an artwork?
The first handout of Professor Lee emphasizes the imagination, the main method to figure out the metaphor used by artists, evocation of which depends on the appreciators’ feeling after viewing an artwork. Another point Professor Lee highlighted was the varied techniques employed to create art, like exaggeration, abstraction, combination, and so on. Imagination can be a good tool to interpret the meaning that an artist tries to convey through his/her artwork.
As an art appreciator becomes the center of the art viewing, it doesn’t mean that they can create any cluttered opinion. Instead, audio tour guides are given more load than before because they should keep polishing the keenness of their observation. I think it is still necessary for an appreciator to have at least some fundamental knowledge base about art, including knowing background of the artists, the skills used to create arts, the history about that time when artworks were created, and so on. Only when you have the right information can your imagination go in a right direction.
The statement that ‘appreciators become the center of the art’ does not mean that the artists are to be ignored. They have to consider those who view their works. In fact, appreciators might make a far different interpretation from artists themselves. The artists have to allow those who watch their works to have their own unique thought.
All in all, art appreciation should be bilateral. No matter which role we take, we should insistently use our imagination and knowledge about art.
